The College Counselors at
De La Salle High School are committed to providing comprehensive information,
guidance and support for students and their families in the college
exploration, selection and admission process.
Our philosophy is that the primary role of the College Counselors is to support
students in finding colleges that are a good “fit” for each individual student;
a place where he will thrive both academically and socially, and will be
challenged to grow in new ways that will prepare him for success after college.
College counselors stress the value of the college experience over name
recognition and rankings. Students are therefore best served by keeping an open
mind in the exploration process, by continually reflecting on what their own
needs and preferences are, and by engaging actively in the process themselves.
This includes investing their own time and energy in preparing academically, investigating
options, visiting colleges and completing the steps in the application process.
We offer the following
services in order to meet our students’ needs in the college admissions
process:
- Full
access to Naviance, an internet tool for college admissions, beginning in the
sophomore year
- A
personality assessment for sophomores and introduction to the College
Counselors and to Naviance
- Small
group meetings with all juniors during spring semester
- Separate
presentations on the college search, selection and admissions process for
parents of juniors and parents of seniors
- A
college preview night for juniors and their parents, with presentations by speakers
from different types of colleges
- Small
group meetings with all seniors during fall semester
- Financial
aid night for parents of seniors
- Individual
meetings with each junior and each senior following small group meetings
- Individual
meetings with students and with families as requested
- College
essay writing workshop for interested seniors and essay review as requested
- College
Application workshop for interested seniors and individual support on
applications as requested
- Hosting
college representatives from over 75 colleges who visit De La Salle every year
- Letters
of recommendation for students’ applications as requested
- Information
and guidance on full range of post-high school options, including 4 year
colleges, community colleges, technical and vocational programs, gap year
programs and other possibilities
- Availability
to students’ parents and guardians by phone, email and individual meetings
