Great athletes in their teens, they have grown into fine men in their maturity, and they came back to campus on June 5, 2011, along with 250 friends and family, to celebrate the tradition of Spartan sports excellence that they helped to develop.
The Alumni Association sponsored an induction ceremony in the Hofmann Center that was crisply emceed by sportscaster Sean Farnham '96, and was followed by a get-together in the gym, beneath the many championship banners, with excellent food and drink from Pyramid Brewing Company. Scott Molina ’78, the great Spartan runner and world-class triathlete, who was home in Christchurch, New Zealand, and professional soccer goalie Adin Brown ’96, who was in a game that afternoon, spoke to the crowd via videotaped messages. But there in person, to accept their induction and reflect movingly on their De La Salle education, were Mark Panella ’85, legendary for his football and baseball skills, Patrick Walsh ’93, still as passionate now as when he dominated on the gridiron and the diamond, Bernie Stenson ’70, a swimmer without compare and the school's first All-American, and the 1991 Cross Country Team, the unlikely group of runners that brought the school its first state title in the sport. Rounding out the program was still-larger-than-life Frank Tamony, teacher, baseball coach, Dean of Students, and mentor to generations of DLS students.
Director of Alumni Relations Tim Roberts '88 said, "It was a terrific event, and we have heard nothing but compliments on the inductees, the program, and the day. I'm grateful to the Hall of Fame Committee and to all of our inductees for giving us yet another example of the Spartan spirit in action."
The 2011 inductees joined a Hall of Fame that also includes the following: Students: Richard Kimball ’74 (long distance running), Matt Castello ’80 (baseball), Erik Johnson ’83 (baseball), Jason Clark ’85 (diving), Mike Vontoure ’86 (track, baseball, basketball), Jon Barry ’87 (basketball), Brent Barry ’90 (basketball), Aaron Taylor ’90 (football), Amani Toomer ’92 (football); Coaches: Perry “PK” Kelly (teacher and coach), Joe Stocking (coach of cross country, track, and soccer); Teams: The 1982 varsity football team; the 1985 varsity baseball team.
