Junior English III and Senior English IV

Students in Mrs. Adrian’s junior and senior English classes complete “Project Dear Abby”. They write holiday cards and notes to servicemen and servicewomen serving overseas. They incorporate writing skills and literature connection as a part of this project.

Procedures: No specific protocol for completing this project was provided by Mrs. Adrian.

Evaluation: Mrs. Adrian notes that several things worked well in the completion of this project, including parental donation of cards and postage. Students wrote notes and cards cheerfully giving them a chance to focus on what is going well in their lives. Students received responses to their cards that completely supported why this activity is worthwhile. Mrs. Adrian plans to continue incorporating this project in her junior and senior curriculum.

Preflection: The student’s read the poem “To a Dead Sailor”. They reflected on why someone would go into the service, how they might feel being out of America at Christmas, and what the country does or does not owe their soldiers.

Reflection: Reflection included brainstorming what to include how to write a note to an unknown person. Students also received responses that validated their efforts.
