Concord, Calif. – De La Salle today announced that four of its students have been recognized as Commended Students in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program based on their exceptional academic promise. These high-performing students are Jack Christensen, Benjamin Gronbach, James Lakin, and Anton Van Oppen.
Each student was presented with a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) by Dr. Heather Alumbaugh, Vice President for Academic Life at De La Salle High School.
De La Salle’s honorees were selected based on the results of their 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) last October. Each scored at or above a national Selection Index score of 207.
“Hard work is a fundamental ethos at De La Salle,” said Dr. Alumbaugh. “These students are the personification of that ethos. They are a reflection of educational excellence and have demonstrated their outstanding potential for academic success. We know that they will do great things in the future.”
About 34,000 Commended Students nationwide are being recognized for their outstanding performance on the qualifying test. Although they will not continue in the 2023 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of 1.5 million students who entered the 2023 competition.
