Anthony Carpio to Join De La Salle as Head Tennis Coach

Concord, Calif., - De La Salle High School today announced the appointment of Coach Anthony Carpio as Head Varsity Tennis Coach. Carpio, replaces Joe McDonough, who retired at the end of the 2021-22 school year after two years of coaching.

A San Jose Yerba Buena High School graduate (’95), Carpio brings significant experience to the Spartans. He comes to De La Salle having spent 22 years as a United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) certified professional, coaching all ages from beginner to high performance. Carpio is currently in his second season coaching at Carondelet High School – a role that he will continue when he joins De La Salle this spring. Carondelet competes in the fall for tennis.

“Anthony brings tremendous passion and love for the game of tennis and has extensive experience in all facets of the game,” said Leo Lopoz, Vice President for Athletics at De La Salle. “We are thrilled to welcome Anthony, his wife, Alona, and daughter, Audrey, to the De La Salle family. Anthony exemplifies everything that we are looking for in our next coach. His personal values and beliefs reflect those of our school, and we believe that he will build upon the success of our tennis program.”

“I am excited to join the De La Salle community as Head Varsity Tennis Coach and very much appreciate this wonderful opportunity, said Carpio. “I am committed to maintaining the high standards of performance and sportsmanship that are commonplace at De La Salle. I have a tremendous passion for tennis and I plan to bring that passion each day as I serve the tennis program.”

De La Salle’s Tennis Program won its first league championship in 1971. Since that time, the Spartans have captured 13 more league titles for a total of 14 altogether. The last league title came in 2012 when the Spartans secured the EBAL Doubles Championship. In 1989, the De La Salle Tennis Team won the school’s lone NCS Championship.
