Five De La Salle Sports Set to Return to Athletic Competition

Concord, Calif. - With Monday’s announcement by Governor Newson lifting the COVID-19 stay-at-home order and shifting back to the COVID-19 Blueprint for a Safer Economy colored tier system, Contra Costa County returned to the Purple (Widespread) Tier, which will allow five De La Salle sports to return to athletic competition immediately.

Based on guidance from the Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), Spartan sports in the Purple Tier that are allowed to return to competition are cross country, golf, tennis, swimming and diving, and track and field.

Schedules for these sports will be posted on the school’s athletic website at DLSSpartans.org and on the mobile app DLSSpartans, which is available for both Apple and Android phones, when available. Click on the sports below to access the sport-specific webpages.

Cross Country (will begin on January 30)
Golf (will begin on February 8)
Tennis (will begin on February 1)
Swimming & Diving (start TBA)
Track and Field (will begin on March 22)

Once the country moves into the Red (Substantial) Tier, De La Salle baseball competitions will be able to resume. For De La Salle’s sports of football, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball, and water polo, the county will need to reach the Orange (Moderate) Tier before competitions can resume. Basketball and wrestling can resume competitions once the county reaches the Yellow (Minimal) Tier. All this information is outlined in the CIF Proposed Plan for the Return of Educational-Based Athletics announcement and the CIF All-Sports Guidelines.

If parents or student-athletes have questions about the sports listed above, or any other De La Salle athletic programs, please contact the varsity head coach for that sport directly by email. Coaches' emails can be found on the Coaches Directory on the athletic website. Coaches from all De La Salle athletic programs will continue to communicate with families with any sport-specific updates.

From the East Bay Athletic League
There was a conference call on January 15th with the East Bay Athletic League (EBAL) Board of Governors and athletic directors to discuss the current COVID-19 situation. The EBAL has created a revised season of sport plan, which is available on the EBAL website, and planning is pending North Coast Section (NCS) approval. The schedule is subject to change and contingent on California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidelines, county guidelines, and school district/site determinations/approvals.

As the De La Salle campus remains closed to visitors, once competitions resume, spectators will not be allowed on campus to attend events. The school is working on opportunities to be able to watch on-campus athletic events online.
