Allan Hightman Named 2021 Saint Benilde Award Winner

On Wednesday, December 8 at the school’s Immaculate Conception Liturgy, De La Salle High School President, David Holquin, presented Mr. Allan Hightman with the school’s Saint Benilde Award for 2021. De La Salle’s Saint Benilde Award recognizes an administrative staff member who plays a significant role in the successful operations of the school.

This year, De La Salle had a number of people nominated for the Saint Benilde Award by their colleagues, and all nominees are worthy recipients. However, Mr. Hightman, who is a member of the maintenance and grounds staff, stood out among the nominees.

In the submitted nomination forms, some of the words used to describe Mr. Hightman were as follows:

  • Allan is the humblest, most dedicated person on this campus. He genuinely cares for the school, students, and staff.
  • He has a deep faith and embodies the core principles of faith in the presence of God, respect for all persons, and inclusive community. He approaches his work as a ministry, not a job. He is a blessing to the De La Salle community.
  • Allan greets me every day with a smile and checks in on my family. He is a wonderful human, who is always willing to help.
  • And finally, Allan has been here for over 30 years and has quietly done his job to an amazing level. Often his work is overlooked. His connection with the students and care for them is above and beyond what is required of him. I once saw him give a student a pair of shoes out of his own pocket because the student needed a pair of shoes. For him to work here as long as he has, at the level he has, and with the care he has, to never have received this award is unfathomable. He is an institution and beyond deserving of this recognition!

De La Salle staff members are not in the classroom, but each plays a significant role in the success of the school. Many work behind the scenes and play vital roles, and are known for their dedication, loyalty, and service to the school.

Saint Benilde earned the reputation as a wise administrator, exceptional teacher, faith-filled catechist, helpful supervisor, and a strong disciplinarian. He was proclaimed a Saint on October 29, 1967, the first Christian Brother to be so honored.

De La Salle’s Saint Benilde award is presented to a staff member every two years. Past recipients currently working at our school include Mrs. Sherry Bedford, Mrs. Marilyn Gardner, Mr. Russ Probst, Ms. Kathy Resch, Mrs. Margaret Silva, and Mrs. Dee Turrin.
