Concord, Calif. - De La Salle High School today announced that longtime assistant coach, Carlos Sumulong, will become the school’s new head wrestling coach. Sumulong inherits the role from Jonathan Clark, who has taken a teaching position at Acalanes High School. Since he began coaching at De La Salle, the wrestling team has won 15 league championships, 15 NCS Dual Titles, and 13 NCS Team Championships.
"Coach Sumulong has tremendous passion and love for the sport of wrestling and is committed to the Lasallian mission,” said Leo Lopoz, Vice President for Athletics at De La Salle. “We are thrilled that he has accepted our Head Coach position."
Sumulong brings with him a wealth of experience beyond the two decades that he has already spent at De La Salle coaching wrestling athletes. He prepped at Northgate High School and was a four-year letterman in wrestling who captured both league and section championship titles. He was also Northgate’s head coach from 1997 to 2001.
"I am excited to lead the next chapter of this storied wrestling program and I am appreciative of this wonderful opportunity,” said Coach Sumulong. “I am committed to maintaining the high standards of performance and sportsmanship that are commonplace at De La Salle. For my family and myself, this is the opportunity of a lifetime!"
