Building Respect and Inclusion: The SCORE Program at De La Salle
For 20 years, the Student Coalition on Respectful Education (SCORE) has been a vital part of De La Salle’s commitment to building a community rooted in respect, inclusion, and brotherhood. Moderated by Mr. Scott Drain, Director of Student Support Services, and Mr. Cris Rosales, School Counselor, SCORE empowers Spartans to take an active role in creating a healthier and more compassionate school culture.
SCORE’s mission is to promote positive social relations, broaden awareness of prejudice and discrimination, and give students tools to resist peer pressure and problem-solve with creativity and empathy. In line with our Lasallian Core Principles of respect for all people and inclusive community, the program equips young men to think critically about their role in shaping a respectful and inclusive environment.
Each year, more than 30 upperclassmen prepare to lead by studying social issues through role-playing, storytelling, and group discussions. These student leaders then teach the SCORE curriculum to freshmen in their religion classes, sparking meaningful conversations about respect, identity, and community. Along the way, they strengthen their own leadership, teamwork, and public speaking skills while modeling the values they share.
To celebrate and reflect on the program, we are proud to share a new SCORE video created by Mr. Drain, highlighting SCORE’s mission and impact.
A special thank you to De La Salle alumni Daniel Berkes, Logan Whitmore, Cap Phillips, Kevin Quirarte, Ruly Velazquez, and Josh Allen for lending their voices and experiences to this story.
