Multiple De La Salle Sophomores Awarded at Contra Costa Science & Engineering Fair

Concord, Calif. - Five De La Salle AP Biology sophomores won awards at this year’s Contra Costa Science and Engineering Fair held March 7-9 at Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, CA. The students were Johnny Cumbelich, Sebastian Doyle, Evan Kamena, Shay Kashif, and Clyde Ramos.

Sophomore Shay Kashif won two awards for his project titled “The Efficacy of Select Grasses in California and Drought Conditions,” which built off existing research to identify possible replacements for widely used lawngrasses. His conclusion that the efficacy of a plant is tied more to climate than region, which opens up a number of possibilities for California-capable options, not only secured his 2nd place in the Biology category but also earned him the Outstanding Achievement Award for Excellence in Water, Wastewater, and Recycled Water Research from Contra Costa County Water, Wastewater, and Recycled Water Agencies.

At the same time, Evan Kamena also won 2nd place in the Biology category for an experiment designed to find a way to recycle surplus carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by industrialization. And Clyde Ramos and Sebastian Doyle secured 3rd place. Clyde for a research project that identified the potential use of cooked oysters as a cheap and safe alternative to expensive water filters in parts of the world where water pollution endangers the environment. Sebastian for identifying a lab-produced wood that will allow humanity to continue to use wood for construction while helping forests regrow and produce oxygen.

Johnny Cumbelich also placed 3rd but within the Engineering category. Like Shay, Johnny’s project focused on water research. He proposed that high-quality plastic or fiberglass be used for water turbines to reduce weight and optimize energy output from the water flow.
