Tradition of Excellence Continues During 2023 Fall Sports Season

The tradition of excellence continued for De La Salle Athletics during the 2023 fall sports season. The Spartans won a North Coast Section Championship and a Northern California title in football. In cross country, Trey Caldwell, who was the NCS Division 2 Individual Champion, finished fourth at the CIF State Meet and qualified for the Footlocker Cross Country National Championships. The water polo team had a perfect 8-0 season against league opponents and won the EBAL Championship. Below is a more in-depth overview of each of  De La Salle's fall sports programs.

Football
After losing the first two games of the season, the Spartans reeled off 11 straight victories, which included the school’s 31st consecutive NCS Championship, when they defeated San Ramon Valley 17-7 in the NCS Open Division Championship game. The Spartans then capped their winning streak with a dominating 41-0 win over Clovis North in the CIF Division I-AA Northern California Championship game. The season concluded at the CIF Division I-AA State Championship finals, where De La Salle lost to Mission Viejo, 27-14, at Saddleback College.

De La Salle was led by East Bay Athletic League Mountain Division Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Drew Cunningham, while teammates Chris Biller, Jayden Nicholas, Matthew Johnson, Derricke Blanche, Dominic Kelley, Ace Robinson, Toa Fa’avae, Ant Dean, Colton Seastrand, and Jaden Jefferson earned EBAL Mountain Division All-EBAL honors.

Water Polo
The water polo team finished the 2023 season with a 19-9 overall record, which included appearances in the NCS Open Division Championship game and the semi-finals of the CIF NorCal Water Polo Championships. The Spartans posted a perfect 8-0 record against league opponents to win the EBAL championship once again. Looking for their third straight NCS Championship, the Spartans defeated Campolindo, 15-13, in the semifinals, before losing to Miramonte, 12-10, in the championship match.

The 2023 De La Salle water polar team was led by the EBAL Offensive Player of the Year Jay Hubbard, as he was one of six Spartans selected to the all-league team. Will Corr, Breydon Congo, and Davidka Skov were first-team selections, while Sloan Broan and Lukas Peters earned second-team honors.

Cross Country
The 2023 De La Salle Cross Country team qualified for the CIF State Championships when they posted a 14th-place finish in Division 2. Junior Trey Caldwell led the Spartans with a 4th-place individual finish to qualify for the Footlocker Cross Country National Championship, where he finished 25th overall. De La Salle qualified for the state meet after posting a 2nd-place finish in the NCS Division 2 Championships. In that race, Caldwell led the Spartans with the Division 2 Individual Championship, completing the 3-mile race in a time of 15:08.3.

Caldwell’s outstanding junior season also included individual championships at the Nike Invitational, the Mt. Sac Invite, and the EBAL Championships. In addition to Caldwell’s accomplishments, Heath Salter was a second-team All-EBAL finisher, while Tadhg Murray earned EBAL Honorable Mention honors.
