June 2023 - Leo Lopoz '94, VP for Athletics

Hello Spartan Nation!

It is my pleasure to have the opportunity to update you on Spartan athletics, as well as highlight some of the many accomplishments of our student-athletes this past school year. The dedication, determination, and effort that our student-athletes put forth on and off the field will never be forgotten.

At De La Salle, we have been blessed with an athletic tradition and history like no other. We often take for granted that our expectations and achievements are not typical for high school sports.  However, that does not mean that our path to success isn’t challenging. There is no guarantee that a team will be able to set goals, execute a plan, and commit to each other in a way that delivers both team and individual success.

It is therefore only fitting that I take a moment to thank those who continue to make our athletic program stand out as one of the best in the nation.

  • Thank you to our student-athletes! Each year, more than 70% of our student body participates in at least one sport. In addition, the class of 2023 produced 27 student-athletes who have committed to continue their athletic careers at a collegiate level next year.
  • Thank you to our coaches and staff who have dedicated their lives to leading an educational-based program centered around our school's Lasallian Catholic mission. Annually, we have over 100 coaches who spend countless hours with our student-athletes.
  • Thank you to the many volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to help support the needs of our student-athletes and coaches. Thankfully the call to serve is always answered by someone in our community. Your support is a pivotal part of our continued success.

Congratulations to all of the varsity student-athletes who contributed to an amazing chapter in our storied history.  Please see below some highlights from this school year:

  • 5 EBAL championships in water polo, wrestling, golf, swimming and diving, and track and field.
  • 10 North Coast Section Championships in water polo, football, golf, wrestling, lacrosse, swimming and diving, volleyball, track and field, and baseball.
  • 5 CIF Northern California Championship appearances: football Division 1 (champion), water polo (semifinalist), basketball Open Division (semifinalist), golf (champion); and baseball (finalist).
  • 4 CIF State Championship appearances: football Division 1 (runner-up), golf (state champion), swimming and diving (fifth in the state), and track and field (sixth in the state).
  • Continuing a streak of academic excellence, all varsity teams finished with a 3.0 GPA or higher during their season of sport. See this link for a detailed listing

Please see below the highlights of our spring sports season.

Congrats to the baseball team as they captured their sixth consecutive North Coast Section championship, and play in the CIF NorCal championship game on Saturday.

Congrats to the golf team as they captured the second consecutive Spartan slam, winning East Bay Athletic League, North Coast Section, NorCal, and CIF State championships.

The lacrosse team captured the North Coast Section championship for the third consecutive season. That is a total of six section championships for lacrosse.

Swimming and Diving
Congrats to the team on capturing back-to-back East Bay Athletic League championships and the NCS championship for this season. The team finished sixth at the CIF State championships to cap off a phenomenal season.

Track and Field
The team won the East Bay Athletic League championship, two NCS (Tri-Valley and MOC) championships, and finished sixth at the CIF State championships to cap off a fantastic season. Congrats to Chukwunonso Udeh who captured the individual CIF State Championship in the long jump.

The team of Luke Trinkus and Tristan Toy advanced multiple rounds in the EBAL Doubles Championship.

Congratulations to the program on capturing its ninth North Coast Section championship. The volleyball team won our first NorCal Championship game in school history.

De La Salle rugby had a great 2023 season, finishing the year with an 11-3-1 record and ranked number three in the country by the Goff Rugby Report.

The class of 2023 has accomplished and contributed so much to the life of the school, both on and off the field, during their time on Winton Drive. On behalf of the President’s Cabinet, we would like to congratulate them one final time and wish them well on their next chapters of life.
