Personal & Academic Counseling
Our Personal and Academic Counselors journey with each student throughout their four years at De La Salle so as to ensure that all academic, spiritual, emotional, and social needs are met. They take their lead from our school's mission to love, instruct and guide according to the traditions of the Christian Brothers. However, they also draw directly from St. John Baptist de La Salle, the founder of our Lasallian charism, who believed in the importance of serving as an older brother or sister to the students entrusted to his care. This holds particularly true for our student-counselor relationships, where the keystone is trust.
Currently, we have four personal counselors available to our students. Each student is assigned a dedicated counselor and is served by that counselor from the moment they enter our school until the time they graduate. This enables us to really get to know our students on a deep level. By the time they become seniors, our counselors are in a perfect position to write meaningful letters of recommendation as part of the college application process.
While our professional counselors routinely meet with students to identify personal and academic needs (and connect them to the many different resources that we have on campus), they are also available to parents. In fact, sessions can be initiated by the student, a parent/guardian, a teacher/coach, or a counselor.
Typically, our counselors assist students and parents with clarifying problems and defining alternative choices, as well as sourcing and providing useful information to help with the situation at hand - whether it is related to a social, emotional, academic, relationship, or family need.
Ultimately, we believe that counseling is an effective means to help our students understand and clarify their intuitive sense of what is in their own best interest.
The Nuts and Bolts
-
All counseling is confidential.
-
To request an appointment with a counselor, please do one of the following:
-
Complete an “Appointment Request Form.” These are available in the hallway outside the counselors’ offices. Appointments are usually made for the same or next day.
-
Send an email or send a Schoology message to the counselor requesting an appointment.
-
If schedule permits, there may be the option to drop in to see the counselor without an appointment.
-
-
Counselors act as supportive advocates for students and parents. They do not make decisions for either students or parents nor are they responsible for changing class schedules or making decisions on disciplinary matters.
-
Students may see a counselor at any time. Counselors are usually available throughout the school day. (If your counselor is out of the office, you are invited to visit another).
-
Should a student wish to change counselors, he needs to discuss a change with the counselor of his choice.
-
Parent(s)/Guardian(s) and family meetings may also be conducted if helpful.
-
Personal situations in which substance abuse support or extensive therapy may be needed are referred to outside resources.
