Hadestown
Hadestown is a modern musical reimagining of Greek myths, combining the story of Orpheus and Eurydice with the tale of Hades and Persephone. Orpheus, a musician and poet, meets Eurydice, a runaway, in a world where spring and fall are distant memories. Persephone, the bringer of spring, has been married to Hades, the god of the underworld, for long enough that he is jealous of the six months per year she spends up above, and he keeps her longer and longer in the underworld. But Orpheus is writing (or perhaps rediscovering) a song of love that will bring back spring and fall, restoring balance to the world. The score is steeped in folk music and New Orleans jazz, and the story manages to maintain the timeless feel of the myths while updating many elements to fit an industrial era.
