Wrestling Team Letter
From Coach Halvorson

2018-19 De La Salle Wrestling Team Letter

Welcome to the De La Salle Wrestling Team (DLSW).  You have made an important decision to become part of the De La Salle team.  We had an outstanding season last year and we are making plans to have another great one for 2018-2019.  We look to build upon last year’s achievements, which resulted in winning the EBAL Tournament title, our 11th NCS 3A Dual Team Championship, ninth NCS Tournament Championship, with 12 North Coast Section medalists and four champions, and the first individual CIF State Champion in school history.

The coaching staff is very pleased to have you as a member of the program, and we have organized our efforts to promote your individual and team success.  Wrestling is a very demanding sport.  DLSW requires you to be dedicated to improve your individual performances in wrestling and in the classroom.  We ask that you commit to yourself and the team to give 100% in everything you do. The coaches admire and respect you for making a decision to join the team, and hope that you grow as an individual and a team member.  If you have any questions regarding the team, individual performance, or schoolwork, you should never hesitate to ask a coach.

The season officially begins on Monday, October 29, 2018, for the varsity and continues through February 23, 2019.  The Junior Varsity and Frosh/Soph season starts on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, and continues until February 9, 2019. You will have the opportunity to wrestle in a number of events.  There are dual meets for both the varsity and junior varsity. The dual meets are generally on week days (please see the schedule) and normally start at 6:30 p.m. There are seven to 10 wrestling tournaments (tournaments will have from eight to thirty-two teams) during the season.  Junior Varsity tournaments are normally on Saturdays; Varsity tournaments are often Fridays and Saturdays. The coaching staff will work extremely hard to see that you have a number of matches with wrestlers of your skill level.   The season concludes with our league, North Coast Section and State tournaments.  There are practices each school day and some Saturdays. Practices for J. V. (typically Freshman and Sophomores) will run from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the DLS wrestling room (every day except Friday which will be from 2:30 p.m. until approximately 5:00 p.m.).  The Varsity practice schedule, will run from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at the Community Youth Center (CYC), 2251 Galaxy Ct., Concord, Ca. 925-671-7070 ext. 221.  Saturday practices will be held at the CYC. Our competitions begin in December. We are fortunate in that we are able conduct some practices at the CYC.  Transportation will be arranged to the club.

Your academic performance is just as important to the team as your performance on the mat.  You must maintain a 2.0 grade point average to be eligible. Varsity wrestlers will be expected to attend mandatory study halls after school on weekdays until practice starts during the season.

Participation in wrestling also involves some important forms for both the wrestler and his parents to complete. Please return these to Coach Halvorson, or Coach Aquino prior to the start of the season. These forms and other information about our program are available on the De La Salle Athletics web page. Click on the links and resources page for the physical forms.

Please inform your parents that our first Varsity, and JV Frosh/Soph Team parents meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at De La Salle in STREAM 501 at 6:30 p.m. We will be discussing the details of the upcoming wrestling season, and the need for parent involvement. We anticipate the meeting to conclude around 8:30 p.m.
