Orientation Program for Parent Support (OPPS)

Parents of De La Salle Freshmen and Transfer Students:
You are cordially invited to our...

ORIENTATION PROGRAM FOR PARENT SUPPORT

OPPS is designated as an opportunity for parents to interact with your son's Counselors in an exchange of information and salient questions regarding your son's spiritual, academic, and physical development at De La Salle High School. Knowing what to expect from your son as he moves through adolescence is helpful. Furthermore, setting clear and reasonable expectations for him and for yourselves - before you must react to his changes - is even more beneficial. Finally, it is comforting to know what Support Services are available to you, should you need them.

I strongly urge every parent of a freshman and transfer student to attend this meeting. For over 30 years, parents have consistently been positive in response to the OPPS session. Parents' use of Counselors and Counseling Services, as well as a willingness to contact teachers and other personnel in the school, increased because of the understanding and rapport established during the OPPS meeting.

The program for the evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 in the DLS Theatre. A general session, which will include an introduction of the Counselors, will be followed by a series of presentations given by the Counselors in various classrooms. Projected topics included: high school faith development; inclusive community; parenting with technology and your son; introduction to College Counseling; teen balance; supporting students with learning differences; and the developing teen brain. Each session will include a 20-minute presentation, 5 minutes for questions, and 5 minutes of passing time to go to the next session. Small-group sessions will be offered at 7:00 p.m., 7:30 p.m., and 8:00 p.m. A couple attending sessions separately could cover six presentations.

During September, we will send a survey via email to all freshman and transfer student parents to determine which of the listed sessions are drawing the most interest. The Counselors will use that information in planning for the evening.

Parenting is a serious business, and we at De La Salle are serious about supporting the parents of our students. We are friends and partners offering you our concern and our experience. I hope to see you all at the OPPS evening this year.

Sincerely,

Scott Drain
Director of Student Support Services Department
