Union | DLS Magazine

"Union in a community is a precious gem, which is why our Lord so often recommended it to his apostles before he died. If we lose this, we lose everything. Preserve it with care, therefore, if you want your community to survive." ~ St. John Baptist de La Salle

Published twice a year, our Union magazine is an important way for current and alumni families to stay informed about our school. Each issue provides an in-depth look at the many happenings on Winton Drive as well as stories about our current students, teachers, clubs, athletes and alumni. Put simply, it is one of the many ways in which we are able to keep a strong community connection. We encourage you to flip through the publications on this page to learn more about our school.

Inside this Issue: Spring 2023 Union – Shaping Lives

In this edition of Union, you will read stories of how De La Salle has, directly and indirectly, helped shaped lives. This includes how alumni, alumni parents, and friends are shaping lives too. This ripple effect is precisely what we hope happens – the gifts we are freely given, particularly by God, should, in turn, be freely given to others. The stories you will read are a fraction of the beautiful fabric that has been woven together on Winton Drive; of lives shaped for the better.

De La Salle High School is a special place because of the people who are a part of this magnificent enterprise. We never take for granted that we move and work on very hallowed grounds. May the stories you read inspire you to share your story with us! Email DLSCommunciations@dlshs.org to share what you are up to, who shaped your life, or whose lives you have shaped.

De La Salle’s Union Magazine continues to provide a glimpse into daily life here on campus and our Mission to produce Men of Faith, Integrity, and Scholarship.

About the Cover
During semester two of De La Salle’s Sculpture 1 and 2 classes, students were asked to shape a visual piece of art, inspired by the work of Alexander Calder, using copper wire and wood. The cover image of sophomore Matthew Johnson shows him holding his self-sculpture in De La Salle’s Fabrication classroom before it was mounted onto its wooden base.

The Premiere Learning Experience
Learn how De La Salle actively seeks ways to evolve and optimize its curriculum – to meet both the changing needs of students and the world beyond high school.

A Tale of Two Fans
De La Salle’s ability to shape lives also stretches beyond those who attend or work at the school. This article tells the story of two individuals who became passionate about De La Salle fans despite having no personal connection to the school itself.

Lasting Impact of Teachers
Humanizing, engaging, and life-changing. These are just some of the words that our alumni use to describe their experience at De La Salle, and the impact that De La Salle teachers have had on their lives throughout high school and beyond. Enjoy this sampling of personal accounts, spanning nearly three decades. Each story offers a window into what makes De La Salle so special: the mission to guide and instruct from a place of love and the ability to educate the whole student.

Shaping Lives Through Service
De La Salle has always sought to challenge its students to serve others and deepen their sense of responsibility for humanity’s future. Service is an underwritten aspect of a Lasallian education that goes back to our founding father, Saint John Baptist de la Salle. Find out how we have been incorporating service into daily life.

Q&A with Andrew Berkes
Andrew Berkes, Campus Minister for Faith and Retreats, is well-known and much loved at De La Salle. He is thoughtful, quick with a compliment, and will go out of his way to help anyone that asks. This Q&A offers deeper insight into the man who has spent the last 15 years positively influencing the lives of more than 2,000 Spartans.

Shaping Lives Through Coaching
What tells the story of a successful coach or athletic program? Is it the wins and losses, or is it the foundation that a program is built on? De La Salle High School believes it is the foundation that directly impacts success, both on and off the field. In this article, we showcase a few of the many Spartans who have gone on to coach at the high school or collegiate level, as well as those that are paving their way toward head coaching positions at the professional level.

Stories Behind De La Salle Donors
High-quality education comes with high operational expenses and current tuition doesn’t cover the entire cost of educating a student at De La Salle. That is why we ask our community for help in bridging the monetary gap. Learn about some of our donors.

Like Father/Son(s)
After 57 years and 54 graduating classes, De La Salle has a whopping 10,626 active alumni worldwide. Today, 70 students, from 62 families, are second-generation Spartans. Now, with the school closing in on its sixth decade of existence, it shouldn’t be long before the first, third-generation student follows in the footsteps of his grandfather. Hear from some of our school’s multi-generational families, as they describe why De La Salle means so much to them.

Alumnus of the Year
The De La Salle Alumni Association, along with the entire De La Salle community, is proud to honor Scott Hugo, class of 2005, as the 2023 De La Salle Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. Scott embodies the teachings of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. His dedication to the Bay Area through his legal work, his philanthropy, and his personal ethics exemplify what it means to live a life of faith, integrity, and scholarship.
