The first of a two-part sequence, this course focuses on improving basic mathematical skills and introducing the beginning elements of algebra. Emphasis is placed on developing computational skills, conceptual understanding, and problem solving strategies. Strands include: properties and operations with real numbers, writing, solving, and graphing linear equations and inequalities, and direct variation and functions. Topics in statistics and using the TI graphing calculator will be introduced.

This highly conceptual course is intended for students who demonstrate a strong interest and aptitude in mathematics. In addition to the traditional topics of algebra, the course will introduce and integrate segments in logic, finite mathematics, probability and statistics. Emphasis is placed on problem solving, reading, speaking, and writing about mathematics and real world applications. Students will be expected to use the TI graphing calculator to further enhance the study of algebraic concepts. This course is intended to provide a solid foundation for further algebra based mathematics courses.

Geometry is a course in the fundamentals of plane, solid, coordinate, and transformation geometry. It includes both inductive and deductive reasoning. Concepts relating to lines, planes, polygons, circles, loci and polyhedrons are studied. Algebraic techniques studies in algebra one are integrated and applied throughout the course.

Geometry (H) is designed for students who seek more challenging problems than those offered in geometry. The course includes the basic elements of geometry: terminology, reasoning, angles, perpendicular and parallel lines, congruent triangles, trigonometry, circles and spheres, area and volume, constructions, the coordinate plane, transformations and vectors. It emphasizes critical thinking, problem solving strategies, and the use of technology throughout the course. To appreciate the power of logic as a tool for reasoning, the concept of proof is a substantial focus of the course.

The development of critical thinking skills, the ability to articulate mathematical ideas, independent learning, and the importance of working with other students are fundamental principles in this class. A review of Algebra is included: the solution of linear and quadratic systems, operations with radical expressions, complex numbers, rational numbers, and logarithmic functions. The course also covers properties of matrices, properties of roots of equations, trigonometric and circular functions, trigonometric identities, polar coordinates and vectors, sequences and series, and statistics. It is intended for those students who have done well in Mathematics and who plan to enter the fields of Mathematics, Science, or related fields.

AP Computer Science Principles offers a multidisciplinary approach to teaching the underlying principles of computation. The course will introduce students to the creative aspects of programming, abstractions, algorithms, large data sets, the Internet, cyber-security concerns, and computer impacts. AP Computer Science Principles also gives students the opportunity to use current technologies to create computational artifacts for both self-expression and problem solving. Together, these aspects of the course make up a rigorous and rich curriculum that aims to broaden participation in computer science. This is a yearlong course that focuses on the big ideas of computer science. It will utilize JavaScript in the programming component of the course. There will be two performance tasks that students will submit to the College Board before the multiple-choice exam in the spring.
Note: A strong foundation of linear functions and composition of functions is needed, as well as strong problem-solving skills and understanding of the Cartesian plane.

Advanced Placement Calculus AB is designed to cover the topics normally covered in a first semester college Calculus course, and prepare the student to take the AP Calculus AB Examination. This course will cover a study of functions and their properties, the concept of limit, and techniques and applications of differentiation and integration. Students will be expected to sit for the Advanced Placement Examination.

Advanced Placement Calculus BC covers the same topics as calculus AB, but includes additional topics usually covered in the second semester of a college calculus course. These additional topics include Euler’s method for solving differential equations, parametric, polar, and vector functions, integration by parts, partial fractions, and improper integrals, Taylor and Maclaurin series, and radius and interval of convergence of series. Students are expected to sit for the AP exam in May.

AP Computer Science A introduces students to computer science through programming. Fundamental topics in this course include the design of solutions to problems, the use of data structures to organize large sets of data, the development and implementation of algorithms to process data and discover new information, the analysis of potential solutions, and the ethical and social implications of computing systems. The course emphasizes object-oriented programming and design using the Java programming language. College Course Equivalent AP Computer Science A is equivalent to a first-semester, college-level course in computer science. The AP Computer Science A course requires that solutions of problems be written in the Java programming language. Because the Java programming language is extensive, with far more features than could be covered in a single introductory course, the AP Computer Science A Exam covers a subset of Java.
Note: A strong foundation of basic linear functions, composition of functions, an understanding of the Cartesian plane, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving strategies that require multiple approaches and collaborative efforts.

This course is designed to present strategies for collecting, organizing, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Students will work on projects involving the hands-on gathering and analysis of real world data. They will learn to interpret and judge the statistical information in the world around them. Calculators will allow students to investigate and explore statistical concepts. All students are expected to take the AP exam in May.
